Summary: It is usually wise to locate the exhaust fans near the area where heat-producing machinery is found in the industrial building. This has the very practical advantage of exhausting this superheated air near its source and preventing a heat build-up in other areas. If side wall locations are to be utilized for air intake or exhaust, it is desirable to consider the prevailing wind direction during the summer season. If the ventilation system can be oriented to take advantage of prevailing winds, the efficiency of the system may be increased considerably, Systems that incorporate roof exhausters are usually not affected by a prevailing wind.

For systems that require high ststic pressure, and especially high pressure TOGETHER with high temperature (where standard multi stage, positive displacement, screw, or regenerative type blowers can not be used) series of single stage centrifugal blowers can be used. Many times additional blower in the system can be advantageous.

Summary: As with all fan systems, it is important to remember that only available air can be exhausted. Fans cannot operate in a vacuum. If the exhausted air cannot be replaced in the facility, fan performance will drop off and production will suffer. The production facility must have makeup air for every cubic foot that is exhausted from the facility. The makeup air can be provided through general ventilation systems or as part of a heating, ventilating and air conditioning system.

Summary: Proper ventilation requires that there be a movement or circulation of the air within the space and that the temperature and humidity be maintained within a range that allows adequate evaporation of perspiration from the skin. It was formerly believed that the discomfort, headache, and lethargy commonly associated with poor ventilation were caused entirely by the increase in the amount of carbon dioxide and the decrease in the oxygen content of the air. There is evidence to show, however, that the deleterious effects result largely from interference with the heat-regulating mechanism of the body. Lack of air currents and the increase in relative humidity and temperature (especially noticeable in crowded, poorly ventilated places) prevent normal evaporation of perspiration and loss of heat from the surface of the skin.
